Azania

Azania

VINTAGE: .mp3 audio recording of a song originally recorded with vocals in 1986. This song was dedicated to the struggle for freedom in South Africa. Words of the chorus are as follows: "Azania! Azania! There will be freedom for Azania. Azania! Azania! We will see freedom for Azania." A name supposedly of Hebrew origin, "Azania" was a name proposed by many activists for the post-Apartheid Sough African nation -- but it was not embraced, ironically, by the African National Congress. I just thought it was a beautiful, musical word with a simultaneous pleading and proud cry in its sound ... and since it's meaning was a bit fluid, it seemed appropriate: "Land of the slaves", "Land built by the slaves", "southern Africa", and more.
